Sky’s new sports channel Sky Sports Mix launches on Wednesday, August 24, with a range of live action free-to-view for non-sports package subscribers on Sky and Virgin Media platforms.

The channel promises to bring a variety of different sports to a larger audience with an average of five hours of live action each day across the first month, all of which will be available to Sky and selected Virgin TV subscribers, without the need for a Sky Sports subscription.

England’s one-day international cricket match against Pakistan at the Ageas Bowl will be the first live sport to be shown on Sky Sports Mix and the new network will be found on Sky channel 407 and Virgin 507.

Sky Sports Mix goes live at 12.30pm with a special launch show hosted by Laura Woods live from the Ageas Bowl, with Sky cricket commentator Nasser Hussain leading a masterclass to families and kids, with the usual live build-up following an hour later.

Across the first month Sky Sports Mix will bring live sport every day, with nine different sports shown live including cricket, rugby union, rugby league, golf and football.

Real Madrid, world rugby champions New Zealand and the Belgian Grand Prix headline a weekend of some major live sport that will also include European Tour golf and the Sky Bet Championship match between Burton Albion and Derby County on Friday, August 26, all of which will be available to every Sky or Virgin TV customer.

A further seven sports will be shown non-live as part of its commitment to provide an introduction to sport for millions of non-Sky Sports subscribers at no extra cost, with Sky’s sports coverage appearing alongside shows like Game Changers and sporting masterclasses, as well as documentaries, sports entertainment shows and other content.

The arrival of Sky Sports Mix follows the launch in August 2015 of rival BT Sport’s Showcase channel, which screens live coverage of selected European football matches and other live sport on Freeview, offering a taster of the full BT Sport package, but unlike BT Showcase, Sky Sports Mix will only be available with a pay-TV subscription, which start at either £20/month for Sky+.

Commenting on the new channel launch, Sky Sports Managing Director, Barney Francis, said: “It’s an exciting moment for Sky Sports as we open up a window to millions more people for the first time.

“Sky Sports Mix will offer the chance for millions of homes to enjoy a selection of the first class sport we broadcast every day, and we hope that will mean even more people find a sport they love and are inspired to become even more passionately engaged.”

Sky Sports subscribers will still continue to be able to watch all of Sky’s live sporting coverage in its usual place across its main channels (Sky Sports 1-5, Sky Sports News HQ and Sky Sports F1).

Sky Sports Mix will be available to all Sky TV customers (not including NOW TV), as well as on selected Virgin Media packages, as well as providing a significant reach for a selection of the live sport available on Sky Sports at no extra cost.
