The British Basketball League will return to UK TV screens on a regular basis next season after securing a deal for live coverage with the BBC.

32 games will be shown live on BBC Red Button and BBC Sport website throughout the 2016/17 season, including all of the BBL’s men’s and women’s league and cup finals.

Following the BBC’s live coverage of the recent BBL and WBBL Finals at The 02 Arena, the partnership is set to be strengthened even further for the forthcoming campaign, which starts in the autumn.

The games will include all three showpiece finals, including the 2017 British Basketball Cup Finals at the Barclaycard Arena on Sunday, January 15, the 2017 British Basketball Trophy Finals at the Emirates Arena on Sunday, March 19 and the 2017 British Basketball Play-Off Finals at The 02.

There will be eight WBBL games shown live as part of the BBC’s extended coverage, including the women’s major finals.

The BBC Sport website attracts over 20 million unique browsers a week in the UK and BBC Sport has over 27 million fans and followers across its social media accounts, with the BBL hoping this platform will help attract new fans and viewers to the sport.

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport said: “We are particularly excited about the opportunity that basketball affords as a sport with a digitally savvy audience.”

BBL & WBBL commercial director Bob Hope added: “This is a tremendous boost for not only the BBL and WBBL, but the sport as a whole.

“It’s fantastic that we can take the momentum and potential which was showcased at the Molten Play-Off Finals and turn it into something special with 64 hours of basketball content on BBC platforms – live and free-to-air worldwide.

“We are particularly delighted to be able to work with a partner as distinguished as BBC Sport and, importantly, this is not only about broadcasting live games, but collaborating to develop digital content more broadly.

“We hope that both existing basketball fans and many new fans waiting out there will love having such accessibility to the great, action-packed sport which is basketball.”

The BBL gets under way in September and the WBBL starts in October with full coverage across the BBC.
