Clare Balding commits to Channel 4 Racing for 2016

Clare Balding has announced that she will return to presenting major meetings for Channel 4 Racing in 2016 after extending her commitments with the broadcaster.

As part of the new one-year agreement, Clare will lead Channel 4’s coverage of the four-day Cheltenham Festival, the Crabbie’s Grand National at Aintree, the Investec Derby Festival, all five days of Royal Ascot and QIPCO British Champions Day in October.

In addition, Balding will also front Channel 4’s exclusive coverage of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in September.

Her appearances fronting horse racing coverage for Channel 4 this year were reduced to just the Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot, after she decided to scale back her commitments to the broadcaster in order to focus on other projects.

Channel 4 Racing’s regular presenter Nick Luck, who led the broadcaster’s Grand National and Derby coverage instead of Balding earlier this year, will return to co-presenting at the premier meetings alongside her, including joint presentation at the 2016 Grand National.

As well as covering the Rio Paralympics for Channel 4, Balding will also be heavily involved on the BBC’s Olympics coverage in 2016, where she is expected to be one of the corporation’s front-line presenters.

Commenting on her new deal with Channel 4 for 2016, Balding said: “I’m delighted to continue presenting the major racing events for Channel 4 and be part of their hugely exciting plans for 2016 by helping broadcast them to the widest possible audience.”

Ed Havard, Channel 4’s Head of TV Events, said: “Clare has crafted world class, award-winning coverage of racing on Channel 4.

“We are delighted that she will be fronting so many events in 2016 and that she will continue to showcase the sport for our audiences together with the outstanding team at IMG.”

Channel 4 holds exclusive live terrestrial rights to all major British horse racing events until the end of 2016, with a new free-to-air deal for 2017 onwards set to be confirmed by Christmas.
