Premier Sports to cover IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship until 2017

Premier Sports will continue to broadcast live coverage of top international ice hockey events for the next four years, including every game at world level featuring Great Britain.

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has extended its agreement with the subscription sports channel that will see it cover the flagship IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, which was broadcast for the first time on TV screens in the UK in 2013.

The renewed multi-platform agreement spans 2014 to 2017 and includes 15 games from the annual IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

Premier Sports operates on Sky and Virgin Media platforms and is available via paid access to over 15 million homes.

In addition, all Great Britain’s national ice hockey team games at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and/or Division 1 Group A and B will be aired in full to UK viewers.

Team GB missed out on qualifying for the recent 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics after reaching the final stage of qualifying which was shown live in the UK on ESPN in February 2013.

Great Britain will be competing in Division 1 Group B in 2014, which is held from April 20-26 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The 2014 edition of the flagship IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will take place in Minsk, Belarus from May 9-25.

In addition to IIHF events, Premier Sports also covers live games from the UK Elite League having taken over the rights this season from Sky Sports, plus live NHL action.

Richard Sweeney, General Manager of Premier Sports, said: “Premier Sports programming content is clearly decided by audience demand and this decision to extend the initial agreement was a reflection of the fan interest for ice hockey.

“We have continued to expand our ice hockey portfolio, which now includes the American NHL, the British EIHL Elite League as well as long-term coverage of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

“This means Premier Sports really is your home for hockey with over 600 games available to view every year.”

Bruno Marty, Infront’s Executive Director Winter Sports, said: “It is a great sign of sustainable expansion that the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is now accessible in a European core market for the long-term.

“With the two-prong approach, fans will be able to follow both their British national team as well as the top games of the annual IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.”

Premier Sports has been running since 2010 and offers sports fans in the UK an opportunity to receive wall-to-wall coverage of variety of niche events.

Its current portfolio is made up of over 1,000 live events per year and includes rugby league from Australia as well as regular ice hockey, motorsports and South American football.
