BBC to screen 2013 World Taekwondo Grand Prix

BBC Sport is to broadcast live coverage of the inaugural World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester this December.

It will be the first time since the 2012 Olympics that an international Taekwondo event held in the UK is screened live on BBC television, promising fans of the sport extensive TV and radio coverage during the event on December 13-15.

The World Taekwondo Grand Prix is part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series which aims to bring over 70 world class sporting events to Great Britain to help build a strong legacy from London 2012.

It will see 250 of the world’s top athletes across eight different weight categories battle it out for vital qualification points ahead of Rio 2016.

All 16 of the 2013 World Championship gold medallists and all eight gold medallists from the 2012 Olympics are expected to attend the world-first event, with impressive matches expected across three days of intense competition.

Olympic medallists Jade Jones and Lutalo Muhammad, together with Michael Harvey, Bianca Walkden and Martin Stamper, will represent Great Britain in the competition, with eight further wildcards.

It will also be the first time that Olympic champion Jones stars at an international level event in the UK since her Olympic success at London 2012, as she competes in the -57 division on Sunday, December 15.

British fighters are hoping to use the inaugural World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester to banish memories of a disappointing recent World Championships.

Despite winning two London Olympic medals, none of the nine-strong GB team were able to finish on the podium in Mexico in July.

GB Taekwondo director, Steve Flynn, says the Grand Prix will host one of the strongest fields ever assembled in the sport.

“With just four weeks to go until the competition kicks off, the world’s best athletes are entering the final phase of intensive training and preparation in readiness for Manchester,” said Flynn.

“We’re very excited about the new Grand Prix series and it’s a real boost to see the significance of the event recognised by the BBC.

“It’s fantastic exposure for Taekwondo, a sport that had such a huge impact at London 2012.”

BBC Sport’s TV coverage of the event will broadcast live via the Red Button, available in homes across the UK via digital, satellite, cable and broadband connections.

Friday and Saturday’s competition is split into two sessions featuring preliminary matches, quarter finals, semi finals and finals whilst Sunday is one session which includes prelim matches and finals.

In addition to extensive TV coverage, the World Taekwondo Grand Prix will also be streamed live online via the BBC Sport website, catering for both UK and international audiences.

On radio, BBC 5 Live will broadcast regular updates from the event throughout the weekend in its sports bulletins.
