The 23rd IHF Men’s World Championship take place in Spain from January 11-27 and UK fans will be able to watch all the key games exclusively live via the online subscription service LIVESPORT.TV.
Handball’s top 24 teams from across the world will compete over 16 days to be crowned world champions, with the action starting on January 11 as hosts Spain take on Algeria.
London 2012 gold medal winners France won the last World Championship in Sweden two years ago after defeating Denmark in the final, while Spain won the bronze medal after defeating the hosts in the third place match.
The preliminary stages will take place across four cities in Spain – Granollers, Madrid, Seville and Zaragoza – with the round of 16, quarter-finals and the President’s Cup (for lower-ranked teams) being played in Barcelona, Guadalajara and Zaragoza.
Both the semi-finals and the final will be held at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona.
Denmark and France starred in the World Handball Championships’ grand final in 2011 at the Malmo Arena in Stockholm.
The French were the favourites, as well as the defending champions, while Denmark, despite winning every championship game, played in their first final for 44 years.
The Gauls confirmed favouritism as they took the lead by three goals at the score of 15-12, but the Danish team were reluctant to give up and they managed equalise the game with a stunning goal from Bo Spellenberg with only three seconds left on the clock.
In a thrilling conclusion, France eventually prevailed in extra-time to win 37-35.
Nikola Karabatic and Mikkel Hanson were key players in the world final with 10 goals apiece but it was the Frenchman who went on to claim MVP as France claimed the gold medal in the World Championships.
Just over 18 months later, France would confirm their current dominance in men’s handball by defending their Olympic title in London after beating Sweden in the gold medal match.
