Sky Sports will show NBA London Live 2013 as part of a new agreement to broadcast selected live games from the world’s most popular basketball league during the remainder of the current season.
Coverage returns to the broadcaster after a six-year absence and will begin with the NBA’s third regular-season game in the United Kingdom, which sees the New York Knicks take on the Detroit Pistons at London’s O2 Arena.
Sky’s NBA coverage continues with live Sunday night games for the rest of the regular season, including double-headers most weekends, followed by live NBA Playoff games, the entire Eastern Conference Finals, and every game of the NBA Finals in June.
The return of the NBA and the London Live game forms part of a busy schedule of live sport on Sky Sports in January and February
The sold-out game at London’s O2 Arena on January 17 will be the first NBA game played in the UK to be shown live on Sky Sports and will also be shown in stunning 3D.
This new agreement adds NBA to the Sky Sports line-up of sport for 2013, which also includes the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia, back-to-back Ashes series, Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League football, Heineken Cup rugby, Solheim Cup golf and every race from the Formula 1 season.
Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: “This agreement provides even more live content for our customers to watch at home or on the move.
“The NBA has a strong fan base in the UK and the sold-out game at the O2 promises to be a great sporting spectacle.
“We follow NBA London Live 2013 with primetime Sunday night games for the remainder of the regular-season and the drama of the post-season including every game of the NBA Finals.”
Dan Markham, NBA vice president of media distribution and emerging markets, said: “We are thrilled to partner with Sky Sports and make extensive NBA coverage – including Sunday double-headers in primetime – accessible to fans on television and across a range of devices.
“We look forward to bringing more exciting moments from the NBA season to fans in the UK on Sky Sports.”
Sky’s new NBA deal will complement ESPN’s existing live NBA coverage which resumed in December, after the new season began in November with no UK broadcast partner.
ESPN will continue to screen some of the best action from across the pond, meaning British fans will be able to watch at least five games a week on Sky Sports and ESPN until the season ends.
Sky Sports also screens selected matches from the British Basketball League, including live coverage of the BBL Cup Final on January 13, as well as the BBL Playoff Final and Trophy Final later in the season.
