The BBC and British Eurosport will be providing extensive coverage of the London International Horse Show as it celebrates the 40th anniversary since its reintroduction at Olympia.
Billed as the world’s top equestrian Christmas party, the show will welcome more than 80,000 fans to witness a mix of world-class dressage and show jumping, plus a variety of festive entertainment and special equestrian displays.
This year’s event marks the 40th year since this prestigious event was reintroduced by the late Raymond Brooks-Ward, the BBC’s distinguished former voice of equestrian sport, to Olympia in the 1970s.
As well as being the UK leg of the FEI World Cup series in both showjumping and dressage, this year’s show will also celebrate Great Britain’s tremendous success in equestrian sport at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Team GB will take part in a special medal parade on Wednesday, December 19, allowing fans to catch a glimpse of their Olympic and Paralympic heroes.
All four members of Great Britain’s Olympic gold medal-winning showjumping team will compete in the FEI World Cup event at Olympia.
Nick Skelton, Scott Brash, Ben Maher and Peter Charles are among the final list of entries confirmed by show organisers.
The quartet gave Britain its first Olympic showjumping gold medal for 60 years by beating Holland in a thrilling London 2012 jump-off at Greenwich Park just over four months ago.
Three of the four – Skelton, Brash and Maher – are entered with their respective Olympic horses Big Star, Hello Sanctos and Tripple X III.
The prestigious London show is highlighted by the Rolex FEI World Cup class on the penultimate day, which was won last year by Maher.
Some of the biggest names in the sport are out in force for the showjumping competition, which is the seventh of 12 legs culminating at next April’s global final in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat, the reigning Olympic champion and world number one, is another confirmed starter, together with fellow top 10 riders Skelton, Pius Schwizer, Christian Ahlmann, Kevin Staut, Marcus Ehning and Edwina Tops-Alexander.
Outside of the Olympic team, major British challengers include Michael Whitaker, John Whitaker, Will Funnell, Guy Williams and Tim Stockdale.
Another British Olympic gold medallist will be taking part in the dressage event.
Charlotte Dujardin will compete in the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage event, one of the highlights of the British dressage calendar and a fitting finale to the year.
Olympia fans will more opportunities than ever before to tune in to their favourite classes with extensive television coverage on the BBC and British Eurosport.
BBC Sport will have all the main action live from Olympia.
Clare Balding presents live coverage of afternoon action on BBC One as well as the Christmas Eve highlights show on BBC Two.
Saturday’s live show will also feature highlights from the week’s dressage and puissance events, along with a look back at all the drama from the equestrian programme at the London 2012 Olympic Games, which featured unprecedented success for Team GB.
If you miss any of the week’s action, you can watch full highlights from Olympia – including the Olympia Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious events in the equestrian calendar – on Christmas Eve at 2.55pm on BBC Two.
Michael Tucker and Andy Austin will be on commentary duties for the showjumping, with Judy Harvey joining Tucker for the dressage competitions.
All of the BBC’s coverage will streamed online via the BBC Sport website.
British Eurosport will also have extensive live coverage of all the jumping action throughout the event, featuring Christmas Pudding Stakes, Puissance and Masters events, plus delayed coverage of the Mistletoe and Christmas Tree stakes.
