London 2012 reaches its final day of competition, with the remaining 14 of the 302 gold medals set to be decided.
British hopes for success on the last day will come from the concluding men’s boxing finals at the ExCel Arena.
Of the seven men Britain entered into the boxing competition, three qualified for the gold medal bouts of their respective weight classes, and today will see Freddie Evans compete in the welterweight division and Anthony Joshua in the super heavyweight class.
European welterweight champion Evans is already only the second Welshman to win an Olympic medal, having secured bronze, but only Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan stands between him and gold.
Super-heavyweight fighter Anthony Joshua could give Team GB an explosive end to their most successful Olympic Games in over a century, as he faces defending champion Roberto Cammarelle of Italy.
Starting the final day of action is the men’s marathon from 11am, with the Kenyans yet again starting as favourites to take the Olympic title.
London Marathon winner Wilson Kipsang is hotly tipped to take gold, closely followed by team-mate and double world champion Abel Kirui.
Another final day highlight will be the men’s mountain biking from Hadleigh Farm.
GB’s Liam Killeen will compete in his third Olympic cross-country mountain bike event, hoping to improve on fifth in Athens and seventh in Beijing.
France’s two-time defending Olympic champion Julien Absalon will try to become the first cyclist to win three Olympic titles in a specific event.
The US basketball side might not be quite the ‘Dream Team’ of 1992 but Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and the rest have proved far too good for anyone in London up to now.
Spain provide the final opposition, as they did in Beijing four years ago, and in Pau Gasol they have “one of the top five players in the world”, according to US coach Mike Krzyzewski.
The men’s handball, men’s volleyball and men’s water polo titles will also be decided.
The very last gold medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games, despite having started on the Olympic Park some 10 hours earlier, will be awarded to the winner of the women’s modern pentathlon, which will come in Greenwich Park at around 6pm.
GB’s Mhairi Spence is the sport’s world champion. Can she come through a gruelling day of fencing, swimming, riding and a combined run-shoot finale to add the Olympic title?
Picking a favourite in modern pentathlon is tough, though – the sport is so unpredictable (particularly the showjumping, where riders are paired with horses at random) that the 26 year-old Scot will need to rely on a good start in the fencing and gain momentum from there.
Then after a short break, the build-up will begin to the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Games as the city bids farewell to a spectacular Olympics, starting at 9pm.
